Intermediate Dutch 1 (online course)

Intermediate Dutch 1 follows on from Basic Dutch 2 and is particularly suitable for language learners who want to improve their Dutch for social purposes.

This course is taught entirely online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace.

Intermediate Dutch 1 is a practical course. The focus is on oral communication in Dutch. Subjects are more general than personal, for example: education and work and talking about the past and your future plans. In addition, your vocabulary will be expanded and you will train your listening and reading skills. Basic grammar will be repeated and expanded to a slightly higher level than in Basic Dutch 1 and 2 but will still be subordinate to communication skills and vocabulary.


This course runs for 14 classes*. There will be a class of 1.5 hours, once a week. In addition to the classes, you will be spending 2 or 3 hours on homework each week, in order to attain the desired level.

Minimum number of students: 8

Maximum number of students: 15

* Any classes cancelled due to illness of the teacher will be made up at the end of the course.

Prior to registration

For Intermediate Dutch 1 some prior knowledge is needed. If you have participated in Basic Dutch 2 test, you will be admitted to Intermediate Dutch 1 without an intake interview. Students that have prior knowledge of the Dutch language and have not participated in Basic Dutch 2 can make an appointment for an online interview, in order to determine which level is appropriate.
