The aim of the Biodiversity theme is to upscale the level of biodiversity research within IMARES to a higher level, by offering opportunities for this theme relevant scientific work that would otherwise lack. We opt for taking a practical approach with achievable goals.

The goal of this project is to combine the fragmented knowledge about different aspects of biodiversity that are important for various policy frameworks, such as biodiversity conservation, the introduction of the Marine Framework Directive, the policy biobouwers and exotic species, and the implementation of the European network of Natura 2000 areas at sea.

Through the implementation of this project we have  insight in a survey of knowledge gaps and created opportunities in the market . We have an inventory of missing biodiversity knowledge within the SOFA project.
