Connecting wide green dikes and vegetated foreshores in managed realignment

A PhD research by Kim van den Hoven. The research is part of the larger NWO Living Lab Hedwige-Prosper Polder.

Research challenges

  • Increasing sea level rise due to climate change
  • Need for dike reinforcements
  • Reintroduction climate change proof dike maintenance by saltmarsh turf application

The research methods can be explained following the first figure in the right column. The goal of this research is to yield:

  • Improved knowledge on the climate adaptation measure managed realignment
  • Increased understanding of dike and foreshore integration
  • Guidelines for nature-based dike maintenance
