Cultivation above the ground: leafy vegetables

As a result of European directives - the Nitrates Directive and Water Framework Directive – the government (in this the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) and growers of leafy vegetables have the task to improve water quality.

Among the leafy vegetables are initially included: lettuce, Chinese cabbage, endive, celery, fennel, spinach, arugula and radicchio.

The aim of this project is to develop at least one operational sustainable cultivation system for growing leafy vegetables without soil. Experiments showed that it was possible for 7 consecutive crops spread over 2 years of production to grow lettuce and endive in the same nutrient solution without disinfection.
