Experience Room: How does ambient noise influence our food decisions?

From previous studies we have learnt that the ambiance of a restaurant affects our level of food consumption. Enjoyable background music, lighting, decoration and an attractive presentation of the food that is served are all related to a higher chance of overeating and satiety cues are missed. However, people also tend to overeat when they do not enjoy the dinner as they finish their plates as quickly as possible. This study focuses on food decisions and consumption as a result of ambient noise and is carried out in a new, laboratory setting with increased ecological validity called the Experience Room (Helix building). Within this room, a restaurant setting is simulated and in which sound, smell and lighting can be manipulated.
