Project
Gene bank for farm animals
Breeding organizations need genetic material to support their breeding and to conserve biodiversity. In the long run, the storage of genetic material contributes to safeguarding not only genetic diversity of the past but also the current genetic diversity.
The aim of this project is to manage genebank collections of cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats and poultry. Common and rare breeds as well as commercial varieties are represented in the gene bank. This task is carried out by the Centre for Genetic Resources (CGN). CGN safeguards the genetic diversity in farm animals ex situ and thus provides a contribution to the Dutch obligations of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
