Integrated control of thrips in potted plants

Thrips in the horticulture in greenhouses is the main obstacle for applying integrated pest management.

For controlling thrips broad spectrum agents with a major environmental are deployed. An alternative is the use of predatory mites (biological control). However, the mites are difficult to establish in potted plants, so repeatedly expand is needed and therefore costs rise.

The purpose of this study was the establishment of the predatory mites to improve the substrate and the plant to enrich with alternative food sources. A strong improvement in establishment of predatory mites is achieved by offering a top layer in combination with food.
