Memorandum of Understanding CIFOR and WUR

CIFOR and Wageningen University & Research have entered into a research and training partnership described in a Memorandum of Understanding. The MoU formalizes a framework for collaboration between CIFOR and WUR that has existed for over a decade.

It embraces joint development of proposals to seek research funding to finance collaborative research, capacity development and training activities, outreach and dissemination in areas of mutual interest; undertaking collaborate research in areas of mutual interest and where complementarity exists, including:

  • the contribution of forests for climate mitigation and adaptation
  • forests and landscape governance and landscape restoration;
  • forests and tree product chain interactions and impact s with a focus on food security, livelihoods and nutrition;
  • environmental services and biodiversity conservation;
  • the multiple functions of forests and trees in the sustainable provision of food and environmental security to reduce poverty;
  • sustainable forest management, secondary forests and NTFPs;
  • carbon sequestration and carbon sequestration in forested landscapes.

The MoU also covers joint impact monitoring and evaluation assessment methodologies and conducting participatory impact assessments; joint collaboration under CIFOR’s Evidence-Based Forestry initiative (EBF) to carry out joint systematic reviews as information tools for decision-making in forestry and related fields; collaboration on post-graduate courses on forests and landscape governance; joint PhDs students, post-docs and regular exchange of scientists; capacity strengthening modules, including training, workshops, learning events around research topics of mutual interest; and organising joint outreach activities to disseminate lessons learned, methodologies, and tools developed through the collaborative research efforts to strengthen efforts in improving dialogue between the scientific and policy-making communities to science-policy interface linkages.
