Opportunities for improved potato supply chain in Rwanda

Looking for improvement for Rwandas potatos.

Objectives of the project

  • How efficiently are resources (land, soil, water, energy, minerals, biocides, labour) presently used and how can they be used more efficiently to increase production?
  • Is increasing potato production sustainable?
  • How can seed potato production be improved.
  • Do potatoes enhance the diet of consumers and will consumers include or extend the share of potatoes in the menu?
  • How is the supply chain structured and coordinated?
  • Does increased production of potatoes or seed potatoes enhance export opportunities?
  • Which agronomic and economic strategies and institutional environment are needed to achieve higher production levels for consumption and cash.


  • A quick scan of the available literature and quantitative data (Jan-march 2012). The project team has extensive experience in the Ethiopian and Rwanda agriculture from field to fork. This part will result in a preliminary report with the SCP elements. Chapters in the report will address 1) Constraints and solutions for potato crop production 2) the product potato in the consumption pattern, 3) the retail 4) wholesalers, collectors, logistics, storage and grading, 5) the producers, 6) the suppliers of inputs, like seed potatoes, fertilizers, pest agents and 7) the institutional environment such as policy, research and other supporting and enabling industries. The product chain, including losses and logistics, will be qualitative and quantitative analyzed and described.
  • A fact-finding mission (April- May 2012) to two target countries each to study potato production and supply chain, to verify the quick scan findings, to identify and fill in knowledge gaps and to identify business opportunities. During that mission the actors in the entire supply chain, research organizations, government departments and other relevant institutions will be visited. We propose a two day visit of an important producing region and a three day visit of the capitals because of the location of institutions (government, professional organizations) and because of being the main demand market (wholesalers and retailers).

  • One workshop in Ethiopia (October), and one in Rwanda (January 2013) to interact with stakeholders, to present and discuss the findings aiming at enhancing PPP initiatives. A side effect of this workshop might be enhancing direct business linkages. Therefore, we propose a one day workshop with long breaks for business contacts. In Rwanda several workshops with all relevant stakeholders have been held over the last years, here more short sessions with relevant stakeholders are foreseen.
  • A mission of 10 Rwandan potato stakeholders to the Netherlands to take note of all business opportunities that are being exploited in the Netherlands and tpo derive from it opportunities for the Rwandan situation
  • Assist initiatives adjacent to current activities in potato and those being developed (January-December 2012).
