Socio-economic differences in resilience related to COVID-19 and the measures (COMPLETED)

The COVID-19 pandemic seems to seriously challenge people to maintain their mental health and wellbeing within and across different socio-economic groups. This project aims to explore differences in resilience within and between different socioeconomic groups. In doing so, we use the salutogenic model of health, meaning that we focus on peoples’ capacities and resources in their specific context that enables them to successfully cope with the COVID-19 crisis. The project draws on a mixed-methods research approach, including focus groups, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

Results of this study can be used for health promotion policies and interventions to strengthen resilience within different SES groups. This is of great importance because the current pandemic seems to have exaggerated existing health inequalities between high and low socioeconomic groups. Finally, the results of this study can be used to inform and formulate learning and action points that provide insight for policymaking regarding possible future pandemics.

This study is part of the research project 'COMPLEX' on COVID-19, which is carried out by the RIVM. In the 'COMPLEX' project, the RIVM wants to unravel complex (socioeconomic) health differences in the extent and nature of the consequences of COVID-19. ‘COMPLEX’ is part of the Health Economics chapter in the RIVM programme on COVID-19, commissioned by on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
