Systems biology Flowering

The time of flowering is an important process for the plant, but also for breeders and growers. The flower delivers important agricultural products as fruits and seeds.

When and if a plant starts to bloom depends on many external and internal factors. Research in the model plant thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) has shown that at least 150 different genes are involved in this process.

This project has two linked objectives:

  • Get a better understanding of how a plant integrates environmental factors in molecular and genetic signals, and
  • Develop a mathematical model that represents the complex flowering regulating network and that can be used to predict changes in flowering time.
