Adaptive resilience of boreal forests

Boreal regions have warmed twice as much as the global average. As a result, disturbances (e.g. insect outbreaks, droughts, and wildfires) have caused large-scale tree mortality. We apply a combination of field observations and satellite data to assess the ability of boreal forests to recover from such disturbances.

By collecting data on the ecological history of boreal forests and their associated characteristics, we aim to determine their adaptive resilience and forecast how resilient forests are likely to be in the face of more extreme future disturbances.

This project comprises an international collaboration of researchers from WUR (Milena Holmgren, Marten Scheffer and Ronny Rotbarth), the Norwegian Institute of Nature Research (Jane Jepsen), and the University of Tromsø (Ole Vindstad).
