Aerodynamics of mosquito flight
Mosquitoes are, apart from being a pest to humans and other animals, also fascinating creatures. Mosquitoes flap their wings at incredible high frequencies of around 700 Hertz, and are able to carry 3 times their own body weight.
We study the motion of the wings using high speed camera’s in combination with 3D automated visual tracking. Using our own high performance computer cluster we simulate the movement of the air around the flapping mosquito to understand the mechanics of flight. Our research will lay the basis for a better understanding of mosquitoes and will aid in the vector control.
