Channel network evolution in a tectonically active basin

The Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta offers an outstanding opportunity to explore coupled fluvial-tectonic processes through its extensive channel network and position along actively deforming plate boundaries. This project uses luminescence dating of quartz silt to test two processes that regulate the avulsion timescales of large rivers: (1) enhanced avulsion frequency through forcing by large, high-magnitude seismic events (earthquakes), and (2) suppressed avulsion frequency through aggradation of the delta plain fed by small distributary channels. Products will inform seismic hazard mitigation in Bangladesh and changes in flood hazard associated with distributary diversions off the Ganges River. This multinational research project began in January, 2018 and is ongoing.
