Cocoa Supply Chain Sustainability & Optimisation
This project investigates sustainability challenges and optimisation opportunities in the cocoa supply chain. Through literature reviews, stakeholder analysis, and mathematical modelling, we aim to develop decision-support tools for improving supply chain performance, sustainability, and resilience. The research focuses on identifying key interventions, understanding stakeholder dynamics, and optimising fulfilment strategies to enhance economic and environmental outcomes, particularly in the context of new EU deforestation regulations.
Cocoa farming is the backbone of many rural economies, supporting millions of small-scale farmers worldwide. However, various challenges—including volatile market prices, supply chain inefficiencies, deforestation, and social inequalities—threaten its long-term viability. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach that balances economic, environmental, and social sustainability. This project integrates qualitative and quantitative methods to explore interventions that promote sustainability while optimising supply chain operations.
The research is structured into four main phases:
- Literature Review: Identifying key sustainability challenges and interventions in cocoa supply chains.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Analysing perspectives on the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives and their impact on supply chain performance.
- Optimisation Modelling: Using multi-objective algorithms to improve decision-making in logistics and resource allocation.
- Forecasting Strategies: Evaluating optimal storage and sales timing to maximise farmer profits while ensuring sustainability.
By combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the project seeks to develop actionable strategies that benefit farmers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers alike.
Results
More specifically, the project aims for:
- Comprehensive mapping of sustainability challenges within cocoa supply chains.
- Insights from stakeholder interviews on the impact of sustainability initiatives.
- Development of optimisation models to enhance logistics and supply chain efficiency.
- Forecasting models for storage and sales timing to improve financial outcomes for cocoa farmers.
