Efficient use of phosphate fertilizer

A better understanding is needed of how the quality and yield of crops can be maintained, in spite of a a reduction in the use of phosphate.

Arable farmers, particularly those who work on a phosphate-binding ground, fear for a loss of revenues in the future because the European Commission in 2015 wants every farmer to only apply maintenance fertilization of phosphate. Phosphate-fertilizer placement can be a strategy to comply with the EC regulations in the Netherlands. Experiments will be done in the southwest area on a soil with relatively strong phosphate-binding properties. A response-curve will be made for placement as well as broadcasted phosphate fertilizer. The goal of this project is to give the farmers insight into how they can use less phosphate without compromising the yield and quality of the crop.
