Fish detection using electrical impedance measurements

Aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, and aquatic resources management require reliable methods for fish detection and counting in various environmental conditions. Fish detection in shallow water conditions or close to the bottom poses specific challenges, which often can hardly be addressed using typical acoustical or optical techniques.

We address this issue by means of electrical impedance measurements using a set of submerged electrodes. Electrical properties of fish tissues differ from the properties of ambient water. Thus, fish presence in the vicinity of the electrodes is manifested by changes in the masured signal.

We study fundamental mechanisms and phenomena underlying electrical impedance fish detection, working towards development of complete detection systems. We develop hardware and software means, as well as algorithms and data processing techniques for real-time fish detection infresh- and sea water environments.

Potential applications of the outcomes of our studies include new, selective fishing gear for low-impact bottom trawling and fish counting systems for aquaculture and aquatic resources management.
