Global Methane Genetics initiative
The Global Methane Genetics (GMG) initiative is a global program to accelerate genetic progress in methane emission in ruminants in the Global North and South. This WUR-ABG coordinated initiative is funded by the Global Methane Hub and the Bezos Earth Fund, both based on philanthropic funds to support methane mitigation and prevent global warming.
Genetic selection can make an impressive and permanent contribution in reducing methane output from livestock globally. The GMG initiative aims to accelerate genetic progress by developing SOPs for recording, standardizing protocols, sharing methane phenotype and genotype and expanding methane data recording in cattle and small ruminants all over the world. Furthermore, the initiative supports developing genetic evaluations for methane emission and breeding programs including key environmental traits and promotes the adoption of breeding values for methane emission in the whole dairy and beef chain.
The GMG initiative will establish and expand partnerships and networks, organise webinars and workshops.
