How flavors in tobacco-related products impact attractiveness

As tobacco and related products (TRPs) can be harmful to health, their use should be discouraged in non-smoking and vulnerable user groups. In order to advice policy makers on regulation, research is needed on the role of flavours on the attractiveness of these TRPs

A vast variety of new tobacco- and related
products have emerged in the recent years. Often, flavourings are added to TRPs
to increase the products’ attractiveness. Research has shown that the addition
of flavourings can attract not only smoking adults to nicotine products, but
also non-smokers and the youth. Therefore, in the EU characterizing flavours
other than tobacco are banned in combustible cigarettes and roll-your-own
tobacco, and will be banned in e-cigarette liquids in the Netherlands. However,
in other TRPs flavours and flavourings are not yet regulated. This project aims
to address important knowledge gaps regarding the role of flavour in TRP
appeal, and to generalize findings across the different types of TRPs, to
determine the effect of flavourings and flavours in TRPs on  consumer perception and behaviour in
different target groups, and to assess and compare flavour and flavouring
content of different types of TRPs
. Further, information will be collected
that will assist future risk assessment, regulation, and policy making.
