Project

Improving pig transport conditions

In this project experimental transport will be performed using different categories of growing pigs, stocking densities and microclimate during different seasons. Important parameters to measure are heart rate, body temperature, environmental temperature and design of the compartment.

The EC Council Directive on the protection of animals during transport (1991) is based on the adoption on common provisions laid down in the “European Convention for the Protection of Animals during International Transport” (1968). The EC Council Directive on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter and killing (1993) states, that animals should be spared any avoidable pain or suffering at the time of slaughter or killing.

Results

Results from this project have to give insight in pigs welfare under different transport circumstances.
