Regenerative business and entrepreneurship practices in the fashion industry
Ishwari Thopte has over 20 years of experience and knowledge in the global fashion and tech industry, which she will build upon for her Ph.D. at Wageningen University. Her research focuses on 'Regenerative business and leadership practices in the fashion industry'.
Unfolding a nature positive future: Investigating regenerative transformations in sustainable fashion
This research investigates how the fashion and textile industry can transition from reducing harm through sustainability to creating positive impact through regeneration. Although circular economy initiatives have gained traction, the industry remains embedded in a linear, extractive model that prioritises material efficiency over socio-ecological well-being.
The project explores how relational human-nature values (such as reciprocity, care, and interconnectedness), can drive regenerative business model innovation in fashion. Through a longitudinal case study with a Dutch sustainable fashion designer, the research examines how these values influence entrepreneurial decision-making and support a shift towards regenerative practices. It uses the cyclical rhythms of nature: winter (reflection), spring (emergence), summer (enactment), and autumn (transformation), to guide its four key research questions.
The project contributes to theory development in regenerative business, entrepreneurship, and sustainability transitions. It also offers practical insights for entrepreneurs and policymakers aiming to support systemic change in the fashion industry. By reimagining fashion businesses as stewards of socio-ecological renewal, the research aims to foster a more nature-positive future.
Beyond academia and professional engagements, Ishwari finds joy in exploring the world, immersing herself in different cultures, and pursuing personal interests like dance, yoga, and meditation. These experiences not only enrich her life but also inspire her work in academia, as she strives to contribute meaningfully to shaping a more regenerative and inclusive future for the fashion industry and beyond.
