Sensor data integration for high spatial temporal resolution environmental information provision
Informal sensor data sources could potentially complement formal data sources for environmental information provision which is essential for environmental decision making. However, the benefits, problems and challenges to use this informal data sources need to be assessed. The methods to integrate this informal sensor data with formal data need to be studied to solve challenges such as data quality, interoperability and continuity. In addition, the methods for data presentation and visualization also need to be studied and assessed.
This research will address issues such as sensor data assessment, the methodologies for informal sensor data sources and formal data sources integration and evaluation as well as data presentation and visualization. First, a systematic review and survey of informal sensor data sources will be conducted to study the benefits, problems and challenges compared to formal data sources. Second, the methodologies for informal and formal data sources integration will be studied by two case studies: one with static sensors in urban area and one with mobile sensors in rural area. Finally, the methods for data presentation and visualization will be studied by comparing available methods based on criteria from data providers, experts and end users. Selected methods will be assessed using data sources from the two case studies.
