Summary

To be able to determine the effects of the development, utilization and management of the large lakes an drivers in the Netherlands on the ecosystems’ food web and ecological carrying capacity it is important to consider the relevant environmental factors and processes on the correct spatial scale. This means that besides the local context, the overarching environmental processes operating on large spatial scales are important. For the large lakes and rivers an important connecting element is the in flow of resources from inland catchments. In this report we describe which connections are present and how these connections between ecosystems influence ecosystem functioning, which a special emphasis on organic matter. To illustrate this concept a field study was carried out in autumn 2021 to determine the pathways of organic matter and nutrient transport in the IJssel-Vecht-delta.
