Maximising shelf life

Maximising shelf life

Companies that work with fresh produce have lots of questions about shelf life and storage. Projects by Wageningen Food & Biobased Research provide answers to queries ranging from: ‘How can I serve a broader market?’ and ‘How do I switch from fresh to freezer?’ to ‘Which mild preservation technique is suitable for my product?’ and ‘What do consumers think of this technology?’

Our expertise ranges from fresh products and postharvest technology to mild preservation techniques, food safety, fresh food logistics and consumer acceptance. Over the past 35 years, we have supported a large number of companies around the world in their pursuit of delicious, long-lasting products.

Preservation of fresh produce

Fruit grower Ferry de Leeuw of Van Haaften Fruit in Wadenoijen asked us how long he can best store his apples. Eelke Westra, postharvest technology scientist at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, explains that while the duration of storage depends on many factors, advanced techniques can make it possible to preserve some apple varieties for a whole year with excellent quality.
