Predicting quality and shelf life

Apples and other fresh produce are stored in ultra-low oxygen cold stores after harvest. This effectively stops the ripening process, maintaining quality for longer. It is important that quality be monitored and maintained throughout the chain in order to provide customers with a quality product.

Is it possible to predict whether a product is of good quality and has a long shelf life when customers receive it? Eelke Westra, scientist in postharvest technology at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, is working on tailor-made systems which allow quality and shelf life to be quickly predicted and confirmed.
