Research on preserving quality
Research into how produce changes after harvest enables the development of techniques to preserve quality. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research helps companies extend the shelf life of fresh produce with research and technology. A good example is the Dynamic Control System (DCS) concept, which makes it possible to preserve quality and minimise energy consumption during storage.
Preventing loss of quality
Fruit grower Ferry Van Leeuw of Van Haaften Fruit in Wadenoijen asked postharvest technology scientist Eelke Westra for advice on preventing apples from becoming soft during storage. Eelke explains that the storage conditions must be optimally tuned to the product and that the oxygen level adapted so as to slow down ripening. He is also conducting research into methods to better manage the moisture balance during storage. Contact Eelke for more information about this research.
