Cancer Cachexia Conference
On the Cancer Cachexia Awareness Day Xiaolin Li gave an excellent oral and poster presentation (awarded the poster presentation award) at the cancer cachexia conference in Turin.
She presented our* intriguing findings of the COMUNEX trial. It shows that mitochondrial functioning in muscle is already reduced in an early stage of cancer before changes in muscle function or mass occur. These data are important for the sequence of events occurring in cancer. Knowledge needed to support the cancer patient in the right way during his or her entire treatment trajectory. Yesterday we heard that the paper has been accepted by JCSM. As soon as we have the link to the open-source publication I will enlighten you further on this intriguing topic. Moreover, Niels Ruber presented with flair and lots of background knowledge, his data on the intestinal damage marker IFABP that associates with weight loss in pancreatic cancer. These data preclude our INSPIRE X study that Niels is setting up in a project cooperation between Maastricht University and Hospital and Wageningen University on the role of gut barrier function in muscle loss in cancer.
