Fisheries Research
Fisheries refers to the management and exploitation of natural fish populations. To date, capture fisheries supplies much of the fish consumed in the world. We analyse how factors such as fisheries exploitation, climate change, eutrophication and socio-economic environments affect the structure of fish communities, food-web dynamics, and their resilience. We study the ecology of freshwater and marine species and the adaptation of fishes and fisheries to changing circumstances.
Our fisheries research is closely aligned with that of Wageningen Marine Research, an applied research institute part of the Animal Sciences Group which provides advice on the sustainable management and practical knowledge on especially marine and coastal areas.

prof.dr.ir. AD (Tom) Buijse
focuses his research and teaching on an ecosystem approach for freshwater fish populations by initiating interdisciplinary research between freshwater fisheries (both recreational and commercial), fish ecology and the health of aquatic ecosystems. He will involve different stakeholder organizations representing freshwater fisheries, water and nature management to better connect science to management of freshwater ecosystems. -
prof.dr. J (Jaap) van der Meer
Special professor Sustainable Marine Food Production -
PAM (Paul) van Zwieten MSc
is partner in an international project on small fish and food security. Eating whole small fish is presently under-valued, whereas whole fish supply vital nutrients for millions of people in Africa. This inter-disciplinary project aims to study the nutritional benefits of eating whole small fish in Lake Victoria and other places.
