FNP contributed to selecting the 100 most inspiring sustainable citizens initiatives from the Netherlands. This Sustainable 100 is a yearly event organised by Trouw, a Dutch national newspaper.

For this award, sustainable initiatives have been ranked based on three criteria developed in previous research at FNP by Dr. Thomas Mattijssen, Dr. Birgit Elands and Dr. Arjen Buijs: environmental impact, contribution to sustainable transitions and innovative power. Arjen Buijs, senior researcher at FNP participated for the third time in the jury and together with 11 other members ranked 254 Dutch sustainable citizens initiatives. On October 6, the Top-25 has been announced and celebrated in Pakhuis De Zwijger. Minister Rob Jetten (Energy and Climate) awarded the winners with flowers and an appointment with the minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food security.

The top 3 initiatives were:

1) CARING FARMERS - A fast growing group of farmers focusing on sustainability and circularity, promoting and living the agriculture of the future (https://caringfarmers.nl/ ). A great example of grassroots developing and promoting sustainable narratives.

2) FRISSEWIND.NU - A group of local residents fighting pollution from the Tata-Steel factory in Wijk aan Zee, through measuring and messaging pollutions from this steel factory, assumed to be the biggest pollutant in the Netherlands. A great example of the co-production of knowledge.

3) STOP ECOCIDE - also a fast rowing group, nationally and internationally, aiming for legal recognition of ecocide, the widespread destruction of the environment, as an international crime. An inspiring example of a small but ambitious and innovative group of people working towards truly impactful transformations to limit the impact of the Anthropocene (https://www.stopecocide.nl/ )

Celebrating 100 sustainable initiatives not only wants to celebrate the winners, but especially aims to be a source of hope. Not only for people participating in the celebration, but for the millions of people across the globe. Hope based on the care, motivation and love of so many people for our planet, for other humans and non-humans, and for transformative change on the local to the global scale.
