Satellite images help detect illegal activities in tropical rainforests. Using artificial intelligence, Bart Slagter was able to precisely uncover what is happening in the forest.
His PhD research was covered in the section ‘Jong Geleerd’ of the Dutch newspaper NRC. By training AI models to distinguish between roads, gold mines, agriculture, and natural causes of forest loss, his work enables more informative near real-time insights into deforestation and forest degradation.
