Mesocriconema xenoplax
Nematodes with a smooth cuticula usually move in a snake-like undulating way. Nematodes of the family Criconematidae, however, are relatively plum and their cuticle is provided of annules. They move like caterpillars. As other Criconematidae, M. xenoplax is a plant parasite. With their relatively long stylet they feed on tree roots and other woody plants. Mesocriconema is a common nematode in the Netherlands where it occurs in sandy soils, it appears to be very sensitive to dehydration.
