Contemporary issues, current best practice and ways forward in soil protist ecology
There is an increasing interest in more complete (soil) microbiome analyses. Many of these include protists. The issue is that sometimes methods and analyses are used that are not optimized to really study protists or complete microbiomes.
Therefore, we here list some common issues that are prevalent in soil protist studies and show ways to optimize the work. We also list terms that are better suited to work with protists than others so that misunderstandings can be avoided. We envision that our work will help authors, reviewers and editors in optimizing studies including protists.
