The Key Register Subsurface (BRO) is a central database with public data on the Dutch subsurface. The BRO builds on existing registrations of subsurface data, such as BIS Nederland (Soil Information System) managed by Wageningen Environmental Research and DINO (Data and Information of the Dutch Subsurface) of TNO. In addition, the deep mining law-related data, which is currently provided via NLOG (NL Oil and Gas Portal), will be included in the BRO.

The Dutch subsurface is used intensively, for example for agriculture, nature, drinking water extraction, underground transport and mineral extraction. The condition of the subsoil is also important in above-ground activities such as urban planning, housing and the construction of infrastructure. In order to be able to make well-founded policy choices about the use of the subsurface, the government must have the correct data. The BRO Basic Registration Act will take care of that.

Information about the subsurface is now managed by various organizations. Partly because of this, the data is not digitized, standardized and harmonized in the same way. The BRO brings all data together in one place and makes it available via a single counter. Thanks to the BRO, the government can operate more efficiently. Information exchange between governments improves, data is reused and duplication of research is prevented.

The task of Wageningen Environmental Research is to realize the national facility and to keep the Soil Map of the Netherlands, the Gt/Gd Map and the Geomorphological Map of the Netherlands up-to-date, as well as to keep the soil physical and soil chemical data up-to-date. Finally, in order to keep the quality as high as possible, it is examined to what extent satellite and sensor data can be used.
