September 2013: Labyrint radio: Arthur Mol about the certification of sustainable aquaculture

How to promote sustainable production of food? That is the question that triggers the attention of Arthur Mol, professor of environmental policy, both at Wageningen University and in Beijing, China.  This week Arthur Mol and his colleagues published an article in the journal Science on one of the research projects regarding sustainable production of aquaculture.

April 2013:

Arthur Mol shared his views on the new Chinese leadership and environmental challenges with a journalist from the online Chinese newspaper Chinadialogue.net

January 2013: Antarctisch onderzoek in het niews

The science section of the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad of January 19, 2013 is entirely devoted to Antarctica. This also includes an article (“Met zijn allen naar het zuiden”) on Antarctic tourism that  features Machiel Lamers research in this area. It makes reference to the Science article that Lamers co-authored last year on the future conservation challenges of Antarctica.

November 2012: TV report on research visit to a prefecture in China

ENP researcher Bettina Bluemling and two Chinese colleagues visited  a county (Gangu) of Tianshui prefecture, in the frame of their research on biogas production, use and its maintenance network.  Tianshui TV broadcasted a report entitled "Gangu biogas attracts foreign expert".

June 2012: Environmental Policy group leading Dutch and global institution in environmental governance research

In preparation of and input for the Rio+20 conference (June 2012) the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, supported by the Rathenau institute, prepared an analysis of sustainability sciences in the Netherlands, compared to similar research in the world. It found that the Netherlands was leading in many areas of sustainability sciences, among which in the area of Environemntal Governance. Wageningen University and its Environmental Policy Group was the leading Dutch institution in contributing to this profiling position on Dutch environmental governance research globaly.

EU delegation visits Centre for Marine Policy (in Dutch)

Op donderdag 10 november bezocht een delegatie van zeven EU parlementariërs en fractiemedewerkers (Groenen) het Centre for Marine Policy (CMP) te Leeuwarden. Het Centre for Marine Policy maakt deel uit van Wageningen UR en is direct verbonden met ENP. Namens ENP was Judith van Leeuwen aanwezig.

Het CMP richt zich op de ontwikkeling van geïntegreerd marien en maritiem beleid. Het CMP integreert kennis vanuit verschillende disciplines zoals mariene ecologie, economie, governance, visserijonderzoek, maritiem onderzoek en zeerecht. De EU parlementariërs kwamen naar het CMP om daar met experts te debatteren en kennis te nemen van de stand van zaken omtrent de herziening van het gemeenschappelijk visserijbeleid. Namens de provincie Friesland was Klaas-Arie Becks deelnemer. Andere deelnemers waren vertegenwoordigers van het LEI, IMARES en ENP, onderdelen van Wageningen UR.

The paper by Birgit de Vos and Simon Bush has been selected for inclusion in Science for Environment Policy, the European Commission's environmental news service for policy makers, distributed to over 13,000 subscribers. the article is entitled 'Far more then market-based: Rethinking the impact of the Dutch Viswijzer (Good fish guide) on fisheries’ governance' and published in the journal European Society for Rural Sociology.

Summer 2011

The paper of Arthur Mol about 'China’s Ascent and Africa’s Environment' was picked up by the Vietnamese media. The paper is published in a special issue of Global Environmental Change entitled 'Social Theory and the Environment in the New World (dis)Order'. Pham Van Hoi built on the work of Arthur Mol by applying the main ideas to the situation of Vietnam.

December 2008: MSC eco-label has more impact to the preservation of fish stocks than WTO agreements

Peter Oosterveer compared two global governance arrangements to address endangered fisheries, namely (negotiations within) the World Trade Oraginsation (WTO) and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco-label. He concluded that the MSC approach is very promising in achieving more sustainable management of fisheries.
