Project
Method development and mycotoxin surveys for Statutory Research Tasks
Goal
The goal of the project is to develop analytical methods that can be used to obtain information on the occurrence and significance of mycotoxins in food in the Netherlands. Current EU regulations in the field of mycotoxins in food cover approximately 40 mycotoxin-food combinations. This number is expected to increase in the near future and include other mycotoxins (for example, T-2/HT-2 toxins, ergot alkaloids and Alternaria toxins) and other matrices (such as baby and children's food). The research of mycotoxins has Dutch and strong international components, which means large numbers of different stakeholders are interested in the findings. The specific objectives of mycotoxin research are i) method development and validation, for example, for European regulations; ii) research of specific mycotoxins in food; iii) innovative method development and prototype evaluation; iv) analysis of bound forms of mycotoxins and research of their bioavailability; v) studies of the transfer of toxins from animal feed to food products with an animal origin; vi) international cooperation.
Method
- Survey of nivalenol and structure-related mycotoxins in food
- Survey of sterigmatocystin in food
- Survey of citrinin in nutritional supplements
- Masked mycotoxins: production and purification protocol for DON glycoside
- Organisation of WMF: Organisation of World Mycotoxin Forum in Vienna, 9-12 November 2014
Results
This research is generally important for obtaining insight into the extent to which mycotoxin food contaminants pose a risk to consumers.
