To effectively address current global challenges decision support systems need to better address societal concerns with regard to employment, health and income distribution, alongside the focus on sustainability goals and standard economic indicators like GDP.
National policymakers’ room to manoeuvre to a healthier and more sustainable food system hinges to a large extent on the impact of targeted system changes on the international competitiveness of Dutch agri-food production as well as growing societal concerns on distributive consequences. BATMAN’s core output is to provide quantified insights into those broad welfare impacts as well as changes in comparative advantages of sectors due to traditional trade policies like taxes, subsidies and quota, as well as analysing new and more complex (trade)policies aiming for a broad set of interrelated objectives (like the Green deal).
