Seeds Regulatory Review and Operationalisation in Myanmar
Agriculture is a key sector in the Myanmar economy, contributing 38% to the GDP and accounting for more than 60% of the labor force. Despite its important role in the economy, agriculture productivity in Myanmar is low, a key reason why farm profits are amongst the lowest in Asia.
In order to support the development and production of quality and certified inputs in Myanmar, the World Bank Group (WBG) is assisting the Government to review, revise, develop and implement seed registration, certification and licensing regulations in order to enable greater participation from the private sector in the seed sector (rice, pulses and beans, others).
WBG contracted Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation (CDI) to review and support needed revisions of the Myanmar Seed Regulatory Framework in order to develop implementing regulations regarding seed certification, registration and licensing of producers and enforcement procedures. As well, CDI shall develop a capacity building programme and provide the necessary training to government officials and members of the private sector.
