Implementation of an Integrated Water Management System towards a Climate Intelligent Coffee Sector in Colombia

This Public Private Partnership strives to improve the quality of the coffee produced so that the farmers obtain a higher price for their coffee. At the same time, the farmers are assisted with reducing the pollution generated with traditional coffee processing. Introduction of water treatment technologies will improve the quality of the residual waters that are disposed into the environment.

Alternating water supply shortages and excessive rainfall leading to drought damages, as well as flooding and landslides reflect the imbalance of water resources. This constraints the fight to reduce poverty and to ensure sustainable development in Colombia. In rural areas, water imbalance has a strong negative effect on farm productivity. This imbalance not only has an economic, but also social and environmental impacts. The negative effect on farm productivity accentuates rural poverty and social vulnerability as it increases the shortfall of supply versus the international demand of commodity products. This increases the vulnerability of the rural regions and the entire coffee supply chain from producer to consumer.

The project contributes in five years to the sustainability, competitiveness and well-being of, in the end, over 560.000 Colombian coffee-growers and to the whole coffee regions, by building capacity and improving farming systems for cross-sector cooperation, sustainable production and environmental protection.  

The Public Private Partnership strategy enables participation of strategic partners who are in a position to make effective contributions to the achievement of the project objectives, making use of their individual and complementary knowledge, skills and expertise.


Our ambition is to improve the social, economic, environmental conditions of the Colombian coffee farmers.

IWM focuses on four main outputs:

  • Poverty Reduction: 
    Improving social, environmental and productive conditions that will reduce poverty, foster peace and promote sustainable development and self-sufficiency in the coffee region.
  • Capacity Building: 
    Fostering inter-sectorial cooperation that will increase resilience and adaptability of the coffee farmers towards climate and water challenges.
  • Environmental Protection: 
    Better use of water resources and the use of forest management and bioengineering to protect biodiversity and promote the stability of soil ecosystems and watersheds.
  • Partnership Building: 
    Encouraging the participation of strategic partners and leaders from the business, academic, scientific and governmental communities in the development of effective solutions to water issues.
