Towards Adaptive Circular Cities Concepts for a sustainable urban environment

How can cities simultaneously contribute to climate change, mitigation, climate change adaptation and resource efficiency? Financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the leading Dutch institutes for applied research Deltares, TNO, Wageningen UR and ECN combined forces to take up this challenge in the 2015 project Adaptive Circular Cities. The results now are available on the website. This site shows the results of the project on a thematic basis, including solutions for circular governance, waste to resource, energy, water retention, infrastructure, circular building and other themes.

The objective of the Adaptive Circular Cities project was to investigate and develop solutions with significant added value, using new combinations of the state of the art expertise, tools and models.

The project addressed major challenges for urban areas, including the implementation of climate change mitigation, adaptation to climate changes and sea level rise, sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystems, finding alternatives for valuable resources and transition to circular economies. These challenges were addresses in concrete issues for urban areas and presented in themes like waste, energy, water, construction.

To reach the objective, a number of ambitious, serious and prominent real world cases are analyzed, both in the Netherlands and internationally. These cases include a new urban development in a former (polluted) industrial area of Amsterdam, scenario’s for industrial symbiosis on a business park in the city of Duiven, the large scale redelveopment of part of the city of Utrecht and (re)developments in the city of Almere. Other cases are located in Gouda, Rotterdam and Ho Chi Minh City. The project delivers tailor made advice for these cases. And because of the representativeness of the chosen cases, project results are also generically usable for other cases, in other cities.
