Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Wageningen Food Safety Research is National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for research into environmental contaminants in food and feed such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
NRL
Wageningen Food Safety Research is National Reference Laboratory for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and is involved in the analysis of PAHs in food and feed. This is laid down in Regulation (EU) 2017/625.
The analysis of PAHs is currently not included in Wageningen Food Safety Research's official monitoring programme. Wageningen Food Safety Research inspects milk samples for the presence of PAHs at the request of the Dutch controlling authority for milk and milk products (COKZ).
EU-RL
The EU-RL for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Feed and Food as laid down in Regulation (EU) 2017/625 contributes to the implementation of high quality implementation and uniform results. It also organises proficiency tests for the determination of :
- 16 (15+1) EU priority PAHs
- the future four target PAHs:
- bbenzo[a]anthracene (BaA),
- benzo[a]pyrene (BaP),
- benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF)
- chrysene (CHR) in food and feed
The main objective of these proficiency tests is to assess whether NRLs are able to confirm the presence of PAHs according to Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006.
