The main question of the 2021-2022 research project was: are marine products obtained from the Westerschelde and the Gent-Terneuzen channel safe for consumption in light of PFAS pollution? New data on the PFAS levels in various marine products, such as fish, shell fish and plants, were needed to answer this question.

The Province of Zeeland commissioned Wageningen Marine Research(WMR) and Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR) to generate these data. During a field campaign in the fall several marine products were collected by WMR and analysed for PFAS concentrations by WMR and WFSR. The results were consequently used by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) for a health risk assessment.
