Chronological retrospective - Livestock Research

1 September 2009: ASG livestock research becomes Wageningen Livestock Research

The livestock research activities of the Animal Sciences Group are integrated under a new name: Wageningen Livestock Research. The integration of various livestock institutes allows for a more efficient cooperation between the science sector and the sector involved in the practical application of scientific results. The end result is that we can provide clients with the best possible service in answering their research questions.

1 January 2008: merger of the Division of Infectious Diseases and CIDC-Lelystad to form the Central Veterinary Institute (CVI)

The Division of Infectious Diseases of the Animal Sciences Group and CIDC-Lelystad merge to form the Central Veterinary Institute (CVI) of Wageningen UR.

The merger creates a broader base of scientific expertise and ensures an expanded distribution of knowledge. This allows the veterinary research group at Wageningen UR to deal more effectively with the complex research and consultancy questions from clients inside and outside of the Netherlands. The structure within the CVI ensures that the Legally Mandated Research Tasks carried out at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries are strictly separated from the purely commercial research activities. The CVI is part of the Animal Sciences Group.

1 June 2003: establishment of the Animal Sciences Group (ASG)

The Animal Sciences Group at Wageningen UR is formed from the merger of the following: ID-Lelystad, Research Institute for Animal Husbandry (PV) in Lelystad, and the Department of Animal Sciences of Wageningen University.

1 January 2002: establishment of the Central Institute for Animal Disease Control (CIDC-Lelystad)

The Legally Mandated Research Tasks are separated from ID-Lelystad and structured within an independent institute, the Central Institute for Animal Disease Control (CIDC-Lelystad) at Wageningen UR. This was done at the request of the government and parliament, which wanted a clear separation between public, legally mandated tasks on the one hand and commercial contract research on the other.

2000: merger of the various animal husbandry research stations to form the Research Institute for Animal Husbandry

The Research Institute for Animal Husbandry in Lelystad is formed from a merger of the three animal husbandry research stations: the Research Station for Cattle Husbandry (PR, 1970) in Lelystad, the Research Station for Pig Farming (PVa, 1986) in Rosmalen and the Research Station for Poultry Farming (PP, 1921) in Beekbergen.

The regional experimental farms in the country are given a greater role in transferring relevant knowledge to the livestock farmers. In this way, the Research Institute for Animal Husbandry is able to breathe new life into the critical link between the animal science sector and the livestock farming sector.

6 September 1999: merger of DLO and Wageningen University to form Wageningen University and Research Centre

The Stichting Dienst Landbouwkundig Onderzoek (DLO Foundation: Agricultural Research Department) and Wageningen University merge their forces to create Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) with a single Executive Board. The DLO abbreviation in the institute names disappears and ID-DLO becomes ID-Lelystad.

2 November 1994: merger of four DLO research institutes to form the Institute for Animal Husbandry and Welfare (ID-DLO)

Four DLO (Agricultural Research Department) research institutes merge to form the Institute for Animal Husbandry and Welfare (ID-DLO).
