Project
Smart phyto check
The aim of the project is to develop practical applications based on new technologies that allow the detection and control of pests and diseases on/in plant products at the place of primary production and to subsequently eliminate them before export/transportation. As a proof-of-principle the strategy will be implemented in four cases of a specific pest-commodity combination in four countries. Hopefully, the initiatives of offering technical support to the countries to solve the phytosanitary problems together may also improve the leading position of the Netherlands in international trading.
In 2013 progress have been made in the four cases.
Citrus black spot (CBS)
- Questionnaire Argentina / Brazil
- Trip Argentina (May 2013) to attend the Argentinean Citrus Congress
- Carried out pilot experiment to analysis interceptions NVWA with LAMP and phenotyping
- Teleconference agricultural attache’s Argentina/Brazil
- Via Agricultural attache to get support from Argentina government
- Mission to Argentina and or Brazil postponed
China citrus long horn beetle (CLB)
- Supervision of a student internship. Lab and field experiments carried out to develop attractants for the adult CLBs.
- A Letter of Intend sighed between WUR and CAIQ for collaborative research on detection and treatment of quarantine pests.
- A business plan was made for the collaboration in research on CATT and CT/X-ray research.
- Researchers visited IITE and discussed about the application of funds for collaborative research in 2014.
Thrips in Thailand
- Two WUR researchers visited diverse research institutions, inspection centers and several orchid farmers.
- Alternative sustainable solutions for pest control (mainly thrips) were discussed with the producers and the research institutions.Special interest on CATT treatment and on the lure and kill with bio control agents.
Fruit flies
- Interviewed KCB to clarify the significance of the fruit fly problem in various import products.
- Clarified import inspection procedure (in countries of the origin)
- It is considered that improving of certification system in the countries of origin will not be crucial in solving the problems.
