A field-scale experiment with a leek cultivation system on water was started on 3 July in Kamperland. The cultivation system has been tested in the context of the project 'Soilless cultivation of outdoor crops: leek' on the experimental farm of Applied Plant Research (PPO) in Vredepeel.
This research showed that cultivation of leeks on water, on top of the soil, is quite feasible and a reduction of the emission of nutrients and crop protection products was found to be attainable. In due course the system also seems suitable for further automation and mechanisation.
The field-scale experiment, a closed syste with two ponds, should show whether the results of the pilot are attainable and whether the system is cost-effective under commercial conditions.
