Dried fish sourced from marine and freshwater capture fisheries are an important part of diets throughout Asia and Africa and are especially important to poor consumers. Fish drying work is performed by large numbers of women and children, and dried fish products are internationally traded on a large scale through informal marketing networks. The fisheries on which fish drying depends are often unsustainably managed, and there are important food safety concerns, most importantly around the indiscriminate use of pesticides during the drying process. However, despite being highly significant for food security and livelihoods, dried fish has received very little attention. The purpose of this internship is to conduct a comprehensive global literature review on all aspects of dried fish production and consumption. This will be collated as a report and will ultimately provide the basis for a journal review article. The internship will be for a period of four months, based in the WorldFish office in Dhaka, Bangladesh. WorldFish will cover the costs of air travel and provide a small monthly stipend. Candidates should be able to demonstrate good writing skills and possess a high level of competence for locating and synthesizing information from multiple sources.
