Johan van Arendonk is Professor Animal Breeding and Genetics at Wageningen University. The career of Johan van Arendonk is interconnected with Wageningen UR (University & Research centre). He studied Animal Sciences and did his PhD at Wageningen University, both were completed with the 'cum laude' honour award. Thereafter, Van Arendonk immediately started working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Animal Breeding of Wageningen University. Sixteen years later, in 2001, he was appointed as head of the Animal Breeding and Genetics chair group. Since 2010 he is Dean of Sciences of the Wageningen Graduate Schools too. Prior to that, from 2004 to 2007, he had been scientific director of one of those graduate schools: the Wageningen Institute of Animal Sciences (WIAS).

But Van Arendonk's work goes far beyond the Wageningen UR sphere. Nationally he is Chairman of the advisory board on national genetic evaluations of dairy bulls of the Dutch Organisation for Cattle Improvement and Chairman of the Koepon Foundation, to name just some examples. Internationally Van Arendonk holds positions in a number of advisory boards and peer review panels, such as: member of the steering group of the European Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction Technology Platform, member of the editorial board of 'Frontiers in Genetics' and co-chair of the International Milk Genomics consortium.

For his contribution to the development and application of biotechnology in livestock improvement Van Arendonk received various awards, like the “Justus-von-Liebig-Preis 2006” at the University of Kiel (Germany) and the “Doctor Honoris Causa” degree at the University of Life Sciences in Poznan (Poland) in September 2011.
