External Internship at UMCU
Good microbiological diagnostics are crucial for the treatment of patients. As an academic center we are constantly working on the improvement of the diagnostic methods used in a routine laboratory. The introduction of molecular techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Real Time PCR (qPCR), Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) has opened possibilities to speed up and improve routine diagnostics. We are currently looking in to how we can improve our state of the art diagnostics with these new molecular techniques. Being able to rapidly diagnose, track infections and study the epidemiology on a molecular level will help us to improve our patient care. The research topics addressed range from microbiology, molecular biology to laboratory automation.
- Study virulence and infection control of clinical and environmental pathogens
- Molecular biology (e.g. molecular basis of antibiotics resistance)
- Epidemiology (outbreak tracking and management, monitoring pathogens)
- Population biology of hospital and environmental pathogens
The student(s) will get a research project from one of the objectives above and can participate in discussions of the medical microbiology group meetings.
Techniques and procedures you can get acquainted with:
- culture microbes, microbial identification, microscopy, antibiotic resistance assays
- PCR, qPCR, next-generation sequencing, MS-based methods, MALDI-TOF
- biochemical assays to characterise bacterial antibiotics resistance and susceptibility
