A one-day symposium will be organised to disseminate results of the G-RAID project (Generic approaches for Risk Assessment of Infectious animal Disease introduction). In this project, European experience and expertise in generic RA modelling for animal diseases has been combined to investigate the potential for standardization of input data and algorithms, to explore options for validation of generic RA tools and to discuss how results of generic risk assessments can be communicated.
Import risk assessment is a useful tool to inform risk managers on exotic animal disease threats, the results of which can be used for prevention, surveillance, or contingency planning. In recent years, several generic risk assessment (RA) tools have been developed that can be applied to assess the incursion risk of multiple animal diseases. In contrast to risk models tailored to a specific disease, such generic RA tools allow for a more rapid response to a variety of newly emerging or re-emerging diseases.
Generic RA tools are, however, faced with several challenges, such as the need for extensive and real-time datasets on global disease presence and movements of humans, animals, and products; the use of algorithms to combine all input data together into an overall risk estimate; and validation of model results.
The morning session will consist of plenary lectures to introduce you to the generic risk assessment tools of G-RAID and their main assets, and to inform you on results obtained for a case study on African swine fever. In the afternoon, two rounds of interactive workshops will be organised on topics addressing qualitative and quantitative approaches, data requirements and communication of results.
