"Science for impact" by former ENP PhD researcher Judith Tukahirwa

Judith Tukahirwa obtained her PhD degree in 2011, and was involved in the PROVIDE project. ENP proudly announces that Judith has been able to receive a lot of attention and recognition through presentations at international fora.


  • Judith represented the city of Kampala at the Coastal East Africa Solid Waste Workshop in Flic en Flac, Mauritius organised by USEPA and Eastern Research Group (ERG), where the Kampala solid waste management model was recognised as a unique and progressive and one that other counties in the mainland and coast could emulate.
  • Judith also presented her work about solid waste chain management in Kampala city at the Global Waste Management Symposium 2012 (GWMS) held in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. There, she was the only presenter from Africa.

Other recent achievements are:

  • On the city level, Judith initiated the development an integrated solid waste management (ISWM) system for Kampala. A project with an overall goal of enhancing efficiency and sustainability of SWM has been approved, with funding of the International Financing Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank
  • Also, Judith contributed a chapter in book on: Future Directions of Solid Waste Management in Africa. This book is to be edited by Prof Romeela Mohee (National Research Chair, Solid Waste Management, TEC, Mauritius) and Dr Thokozani Simelane (Africa Institute of South Africa, Head: Science and Technology, Africa Institute of South Africa).
