New in the Library's collection: "The joy of science", by Jim Al-Khalili. This engaging ebook (Princeton UP, 2022) presents 8 short lessons on how to use critical, scientific thinking to counter misinformation and to recognise our own biases.

Scientific thinking in everyday life

Jim Al-Khalili is professor of theoretical physics and holds a chair in Public Engagement in Science at the University of Surrey. Writing in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and all the misinformation that accompanied it, Al-Khalili explains how to use scientific, critical thinking in our everyday lives.

Each short, easy-to-read chapter is a piece of advice, distilled from some particular aspect of the scientific method. Al-Khalili tackles issues such as how to properly evaluate the credibility of sources, to recognise your own biases, to prioritise evidence over anecdotes and opinions, and to embrace a willingness to change your mind.
